Rounding and Compensating

This week we have been learning rounding and compensating. Here are they. Can you spot any errors?

Mighty Hoax Teacher Activity

WALT: Practice the strategies we have learn’t this term.

1. Identify how many tens are in a number.
  1. Miss May wants to take room 5 to the movies. She has $300. The movies cost $10 each. She has 26 students. Does she have enough money? Yes  How do you know?
Because the movie tickets cost 10 dollars each and the number is 26.So it’s 260 dollars all together.
  1. Room 5 is going on an ANZAC trip. There are 30 students. Each student needs to pay $10. Miss May has $260. Did everyone pay their money? How do you know?
Because there are 30 students and the money is 260$.But there needs to be 300$,so no  because everyone didn’t pay their money.

Identify how many hundreds are in a number.
Tickets to a Jay Z Concert cost $100. How many tickets can I buy if I have:
  1. $3578= 350 tickets
  2. $2601=260 tickets

3.  Use rounding and compensating to solve addition and subtraction problems.

  1. 56 + 99 = 155, 99 + 1 =100, 100 + 56 =156,156-1=155
  2. 67 + 9=76, 9 +1=10,10 +67=77,77-1=76
  3. 98 + 63= 162,98 +2=100,100+63=163,163-1=162
  4. 73 - 19=67, 19-1=18,73-19=66,66+1=67
  5. 82 - 29=68, 29-1=28,82-29=67,67+1=68
