IALT: Adopt a native animal to New Zealand and explain why I chose that animal out of the rest.
Day #3
Activity 1: Curious Kiwi, a native New Zealand bird, is your tour guide for today. He is going to take you to visit the Otorohanga Kiwi House and Native Bird Park where many of his aunties and uncles currently live. The bird park is a five hour drive from Dargaville so you hit the road right after breakfast and arrive in Otorohanga at lunch time. As you walk through the birdhouse you learn about the work being done to conserve and protect the native birds of New Zealand. You decide to help out by ‘adopting’ a native animal. Visit the ‘Adopt a Critter page’ on the Otorohanga bird house website to choose one animal to adopt. On your blog, tell us the name of the animal that you chose and a little bit about them. What kind of animal are they? What do they eat? Where do they normally live? You can use Google to help you with your research.
The Kakapo, The Kiwi, The Kea Parrot, The Yellow Eyed Penguin, and the Pekapeka Bat are all native animals to New Zealand. I have to choose one of these to adopt and make them my pet, to keep and to ensure it is safe and not endangered under any circumstance. All of these animals are really cute, and really do represent New Zealand with pride and joy. I am going with my mind, and the animal I am going to choose it the Kakapo Bird.
This is a bird, in which is endangered and it's numbers have decreased dramatically over the years. Now I am the proud owner of one, and have been entrusted to help bring it's population number back up after it was risked to be extinct due to pest infestation. The Kakapo's diet is nuts, seeds, fruits, berries and flowers. All in which I can buy from the supermarket, and feed my pet to breed again.
These native birds normally live in inhabited forests including those dominated by podocraps, beeches , tawa and rata. It is also known to be the world's heaviest bird weighing in at 3.5 kilograms!
I am fascinated by what I found out about this bird because it is an amazing bird that will someday become more populated and more well known.
Feel free to leave a comment.
Many thanks :)

Hey Gary,
You sound like you are going to take great care of your new Kakapo, do you think you will give it a name? Wow, 3.5kg is quite heavy for a bird! Did you know that the Kakapo can't actually fly? Maybe it's because it is so big and heavy!
Ka pai, Gary!
Nicky :)
