Buddy Reading

IALT: Read with my buddy and ask him some questions about the book for him to have a better understanding.

Today for Buddy Reading, I was running a bit late because I had been through an accident during lunch time. From my chest down to my pants it was all muddy, as if I had been sliding on the grass. I quickly went off to ask the caretaker for a spare jumper and then I went off to read with my buddy. Like any normal buddy he was waiting patiently for me, something I taught him. Whenever I was late for any reason I told him to wait for me because I would turn up anyways, no matter what.

The book we read today was based on a princess going for her bike race, she was having trouble looking for her gear, and suddenly she asked if she could race in her crown! The queen was furious with this decision and replied no! I didn't know why someone would ask that question as racing with a crown, is a very , very, well stupid question. Anyways, he kept reading until the end, and then I asked him some questions.

He was getting better and better at what he was doing. I know he knew what he was doing because he didn't hesitate to answer the questions, only asking for help with some words that I thought weren't for his year level. His confidence made me realise that I was a huge impact on what he was going to be in the future.

A challenge I found during this time was when I had to ask him some questions. I didn't quite know what to ask, but in the end I did.

Buddy Reading Reflection

IALT: Talk about what I taught and learnt from my buddy.

On Friday, while reading with my buddy I was astonished at how better and better he was getting at Reading his books! I know that I am a good example for him, but this time I was more shocked then ever. Not only was he not asking for my help, but he managed to go through his book without stopping and asking to read with him. I know that I was helping him , a lot, but now at the time I was not getting the fact that he was not improving because he deserves to become a great leader in the future.

I was exhausted because lunch had just finished, but I still didn't want to make my buddy think I wasn't ready for him, because that wouldn't be a wise move. But just listening to him read made me think 'If I were to continue and help him, maybe he'll move up levels really quick' I smiled as I thought about this, because I had a goal, and I always achieve my goal no matter the cost.

While reading with him, I learnt that he was improving not only with calling out the words, but the accuracy of him reading the words, and memorising them. Made me surprised as it was only my 3rd weeks working with him. Although he isn't my normal buddy I still make him like he is my buddy because everyone deserves to be treated the same.

A challenge I found during this time was not helping him, I'm a helping guy but I am not used to just sitting there. I can't wait to read with him again.

Buddy Reading!

IALT: Write about what I did and learnt during Buddy Reading.

As you all know my buddy is Elijah and he is a young child destined for greatness. Not only is he a smart learner but he is also a strong boy who doesn't give up and always wants to give things a go. I wasn't too surprised when he read the book without my help because I knew I was helping him get better at Reading, and also help him to remember that he can do things when he put's his mind into it and always know that anyone will be there to help him.

The one thing that made me shocked was when he went through THREE books without the need for assistance! I knew that my example and leadership was getting him on the right way, and that I was the one who he would trust to help him nail the challenges he will come across. Something I learnt from him, is that he bothers to ask for help because he knows that if he doesn't we will get himself into trouble for not doing anything.

I felt as if he didn't need me anymore because he was growing the skills he needed. If I were to leave him something valuable it would be to never give up and always give things a try, you never know you might like it.

A challenge I faced was when I had to tell others to stop playing around and tell others that they are here to teach the little kids and help them improve their reading.

Buddy Reading Reflection

IALT: Talk about what I learnt and did during the time I spent with Buddy Reading.

Yesterday I had a great time with Elijah because  saw he was starting to build confidence and self esteem in himself. Not only was he doing better at Reading the books, bu he was also getting more and more better at memorising the information and then when it came to me asking him questions, he didn't bother to look like her didn't know. I was proud of myself because I had begun to start helping my buddy for what I came down here to do. Help him get better at Reading, that's all that matters while I spend time with him.

On some occasions he doesn't know some of the words, I don't expect him to because they look like words that a Year 4 should be reading, not a year 2. But that's why I'm there, I can tell when he's stuck because he either stops and pauses, or tries to sound it out himself, to me I think that what ever is going around in his tiny head, he will one day because able to problem solve and then be able to recognise words without the need of any assistance.

The best part of the session was when I had to ask him questions about the book he just read. I could imagine him in a few years time taking my place as a Student Leader and helper to help the younger students. He reminds me of when I was younger, the help I needed, and who helped me to do it. Those who helped my class then have already moved onto college, back in intermediate we were big fish in a small pond, but out there in college , small fish in a big pond . One day hoping to grow bigger, maturer and continue to apply the things we learnt in Intermediate into our daily lives.

Leaving him after buddy reading , doesn't get me down too much because I know he will be there the next day. I can't wait to see the things he will improve in the next years, as I depart to college next year I will be leaving behind some tips on how to become a great student at Tamaki Primary, like me.

A challenge I faced was when other students weren't doing what they were told to do, they would get smart often and wouldn't do as I asked. Ms Komor told All Student Council members that were are a prime example of the students who were are destined to be.

My next learning steps , is to help him pick a level higher book.
