My Peer Pressure Speech!

Talofa Lava, Malo E Lelei and Greetings to you all, My name is Gary. Today I will be talking about “Standing Up To Peer Pressure” Whether it’s a positive or negative choice, it still counts as Peer Pressure. Have you ever been in a situation where your friends tell you to do something bad? Been in a situation where you choose the wrong from the right? I will be talking about 3 main parts in Peer Pressure, they are: What is Peer Pressure? Why is peer pressure an especially strong force in the life of a teenager or kid? And how to say “No” to peer pressure.

The first part I will be talking about is, What is Peer Pressure? Peer Pressure is when someone persuades another person into doing something. It might be bad or good things. I will start off with the bad. Bad Peer Pressure is when people influence others into following their ways. The actions you have committed in the past, can impact on things yet to come.

Being an individual means making decisions based on what is best for you. It means taking ownership and responsibility for what you do and how you think. But being an individual also means that you can be a valued part of a comfortable and welcoming group. It might be hard to resist peer pressure and stay an individual.

Now for the bright side, true friends are always there by your side no matter what, and they treat you like their siblings. Good Peer Pressure is when others tell you to be… Honest, Nice, Respectful, Hard Working, Avoid Drugs, Smoking and Alcohol. Positive Peer Pressure also is  when your friends or people the same age as you persuade you to do exercise and be helpful to others around you.

Why is peer pressure an especially strong force in the life of a child/teenager?

Teenager’s or kid’s peer pressure takes a variety of forms, from teenagers who encourage friends to commit in dangerous or risky things. Teen’s or kid’s who are committed to not drink or smoke are far more likely to feel left out of the group of their friends. Which behaviour changes dramatically and they too, try and become more like their friends.

How to say “No” to peer pressure.

You may feel that if you don't go along, they will laugh at you or not be your friends. There are ways to say no to peer pressure that will help you get out of the situation. The trick is to practise these when you're alone, or with your parents or someone you trust.Sometimes it is hard to say no to friends. Often it is easier to “go along” with someone's idea than to let people know how you really feel. Peer pressure occurs when other kids your age push you to do something that:
  • You don't want to do
  • Makes you uncomfortable
  • You know will get you into trouble
You may feel that if you don't go along, they will laugh at you or not be your friends. There are ways to say no to peer pressure that will help you get out of the situation. Here are a few simple ways to say no.
  1. Just say no.
  2. In some situations, just saying no without a lot of arguing and explaining is the best response. Just make sure your “no” is a strong and determined one.
  3. And give a reason why it's a bad idea.
I’m sick of hearing my friends getting into trouble from following the wrong path, it’s time we take a stand and start making the wrong decisions.  I once heard that when Sonny Bill Williams was young, he wasn’t on the right track. But when at the age of 14 he started changing his ways… And look where he is now! I dream of becoming a sport star, but it all counts on the decisions you make.

Overall, I think that peer pressure is a very hard thing, when you are struck with peer pressure it’s hard to choose the right way. “It’s better to walk alone than with a crowd going in the wrong direction. Do what you feel is right” Now my speech has come to an end. Thank you for having the time to listen to my speech. Remember stop trying to fit in when you were born to stand out!
