Take a Stand for Hector Dolphins! - WLJ

IALT: Read about Hector Dolphins dead due to getting caught in fishing nets.

Spit to see a group (pod) of Hector’s Dolphins. It is going to be an early morning!
Bonus Activity: Hector’s dolphins are a very special native animal found only in New Zealand. They are the smallest dolphin in the world measuring 1.5 metres long and they are quite rare. Sadly, many Hector’s dolphins are killed every year when they get caught in large fishing nets and can’t escape. Some people have argued that fishermen shouldn’t be allowed to fish in Farewell Spit in order to protect the dolphins living there. What do you think? On your blog, tell us whether you think that fishing in Farewell Spit should be banned (stopped).

I think we should STOP fishing in Farewell Spit!
Hector Dolphins are one of the smallest marine animals on the planet, measuring about 1.5 metres in length. I am 180 cm tall, meaning I am 1.8 tall in metres. It's hard to believe that I am taller then a marine mammal because most of them are much, much taller than I am. Due to their numbers decreasing dramatically, I think that fishing should be banned in Farewell Spit because too much Dolphins are getting caught and killed due to stress and not enough space for it to freely swim around.
Banning fishing in Farewell Spit can help it's numbers increase because seeing one if really rare, due to their low numbers. But if we all took a stand and called for banning fishing in an area where Hector Dolphins live, it can help others realise that we should stop and help bring their numbers up before it's too late (Extinction)

Like us, we should treat others the way we want to be treated. Imagine dolphins being humans and humans being dolphins. If they continued to treat us the way we are treating them now, we would rather die the live to get tortured and caught again, right? Once caught in a net they will hold their breath until they suffocate which is heart breaking
Sometime we need to think about the way others will feel when you give them an answer, or put them in a situation where their is only 2 ways out, Our way or the hard way which is our way anyway. I agree, banning fishing is the way to go!

Feel free to leave a comment.
Many thanks :)

Hey Gary,

I love how you related the Hector dolphin's back to people in saying that we should treat them how we wanted to be treated. They may not be human, but they are animals and should be cared for just like we care for our friends and family because they are living and breathing just like us!

It's great to hear you opinion on this, so much empathy!

Nicky :)
